‘It’s another conundrum,’ Maud said, as she took the note and read it for herself. ‘It’s on the same good quality notepaper. Perhaps this clue won’t be as misleading as the last one.’ Maud couldn’t keep the doubt from her voice.

‘It sounds more difficult to me.’ Daisy nodded at the paper in Maud’s hand.

‘Let’s get down to it, take it bit by bit.’

Maud quickly finished her tea and Daisy set aside her bowl. Moving their chairs closer to one another, they put their heads together. The rhyme passed from Daisy’s hand to Maud’s and back again more times than they cared to count. The tall clock in the hall struck the quarter hour. When it struck the half hour, they were still struggling with the verse.

‘You ken, it’s this angels business that’s hard,’ declared Daisy for the tenth time. ‘Where angels gather in the wood.’

‘I have a feeling that if we could just solve that line, it would all become clear,’ Maud agreed.

‘Whoever heard of angels gathering in a wood?’ Daisy said scornfully. ‘Everyone kens they live in heaven.’

‘The Archangel Gabriel came down from heaven…’

‘Aye, but nae in Fort William.’

Maud sighed. ‘What about a church?’ she asked suddenly.

Daisy wrinkled her brow. ‘A church in the middle of a wood?’

‘Forget the wood for a moment, Daisy. Let’s focus on angels and where they might be.’

‘A monument in a burial ground.’

‘That’s a start,’ Maud said, imagining an ornate column of stone with an angel carved at the top. Was there such a gravestone in or near the town?

‘Inside a church,’ went on Daisy.

‘There will certainly be an angel featured in a stained-glass window.’

‘It’s an idea when we havena got any good ones.’ Daisy slumped back in her chair.

‘Although I’m not sure about this third line: Destroying the peacefulness that’s there. Whatever could that mean?’

‘The kirk is always a peaceful place, but if an angel came down it would cause a bit of a stushie, right enough,’ Daisy said.

‘And what about the connection with the victim starting to feel unwell?’

‘I suppose a visitor from above might make a few people start to feel a wee bit peely-wally.’

‘That’s not very helpful, Daisy,’ Maud said with a smile. ‘But I take your point. The church idea doesn’t sound very probable, after all. Perhaps, though, the graveyard…’

‘I’m keeping an open mind. You ken me, open-minded to a fault.’ Daisy grinned. She poured out another cup of tea for Maud. ‘Drink this. It’ll perk you up.’

‘At this rate we’ll be here until luncheon without solving the clue.’ Maud took a sip of her second cup and found the tea had cooled. ‘Let’s leave the puzzle for a bit and go for a walk to clear our heads.’

‘A walk?’ Daisy shuddered. ‘I dinna feel that scunnered.’

Maud’s thoughts were going round and round, much like the wheels of a bicycle. She left Daisy with a notebook and pencil, trying to work out the clue in front of the fire in Daisy’s bedroom. As she pulled on her coat, hat
